Compared to the previous Game Boy Advance version of the game, New Leaf entails a much newer Graphical User Interface, though the plot and gameplay remain the same. New Leaf also sports an easier tutorial and smoother gameplay. Like the previous games in the series, the game is synced to the system clock, which affects its gameplay based on the current time and year. New to the game is the player becoming the mayor of “Sandy Shores,” a town inhabited entirely by animals, and gaining certain control over it.
